eBay Offered here is an extremely rare whiskey shot glass with the bust portrait of George Washington in impressed relief in the base. It is a Chicago World’s Fair souvenir item, inscribed on the side of the body “Emelia – 1893.” The clear glass measuring 2-3/16 inches tall, the top measures just under 2 inches in diameter and the base with 28 molded flutes is about 1-9/16 inches across. It is fluorescent under uv light. CONDITION: This item is in absolutely, perfect condition! SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THIS ITEM: The Libbey Glass Company introduced a glass axe at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair with the same bust portrait of George Washington that appears in the base of this item. I reached out to the Libbey Glass company sometime in about the early 2000s, but they had no information about this item and referred me to the Corning Museum, who also had no information to offer. After contacting several glass museums and not finding no item such as this was ever listed in their data bases, and not another one ever came up for auction, I listed it on ebay about 10-12 years ago. While the listing was running, a person who is in the business of selling pre-prohibition shot glasses posted disparaging remarks about it on his information site and alleged this item is not a shot glass, but a “jelly glass.” Apparently, the person was ignorant of the facts related to Victorian era jelly glasses, and too lazy to do any research to learn anything about them. George Washington was never involved in making jelly. He and his plantation manager, James Anderson, in about the mid 1790s, engaged in the making of whiskey, and by 1799, George Washington had the largest whiskey distillery in the entire country. The distillery is still in business to this day. There is another odd fact that I should mention. While this item was listed on ebay in about 2010, a listing popped up for a shot glass that resembled this one, but the images were very poor, and the seller never responded to my inquiry. I have since searched for another item as this, but for more than 20 years, I’ve found no other. Images of this item may have been photo-shopped and/or used by others to claim they have one in their collection. BUYER PAYS SHIPPING!
